Located on Johns Island, the Angel Oak Tree is a must-see-free thing to do in Charleston for nature lovers.
This ancient oak tree is estimated to be over 400 years old and is truly a sight to behold.
Make sure you go when they open otherwise you will be viewing the tree behind a fence like we did. Even behind a fence, the Angel Oak Tree was still glorious!

If you are looking for a free adventure near Charleston you can also walk out at the inlet Heritage Preserve to see the lighthouse at a distance.
This experience is truly one you will want to experience. Make sure to bring your bug spray, certain times of the year provide nasty bugs that bite hard. We couldn’t stay too long when we went in June because the bugs were so bad. Try going in Early spring or late fall.

I absolutely loved this area when visiting Charleston. We brought our Chairs and fished for several hours while we watched dolphins and enjoyed the cool breeze- you could also launch your kayak around this area too.

This beautiful park in downtown Charleston offers lush gardens, walking paths, and plenty of space for picnicking and relaxation.

24. Folly Beach
Just a short drive from Charleston, Folly Beach is a popular destination for sun, sand, and surf. This was one of my favorite beaches near Charleston. I loved that the shoreline seemed to be spacious.
You have a cabana with food, restrooms, showers, and snacks at Folly Beach County Park.

25. Sullivan’s Island
Sullivan’s Island is another great beach destination near Charleston. It’s known for its laid-back atmosphere, historic sites, and beautiful natural scenery.
We found many windsurfers off this island, and it was the coolest thing to watch. We also found the Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse (which is super easy to find and walk by). You can also tour the Battery Jasper and Fort Moultrie which are both historic sites you may need to pay for.

26. Riverfront Park in North Charleston
Riverfront Park offers scenic views of the Cooper River and features walking trails, picnic areas, a dog park, and a playground for children. It’s a great spot for outdoor recreation.
You may even run into live concerts in the park, as there is a fairly large venue for that. You can find tickets, bands, and scheduling for concerts on the Highwaterfest website.

Edisto Island is about 50 Minutes away from Charleston but offers some unique areas such as Botany Bay with its amazing driftwood beach.

Keep in mind, this is not a park and is not a big area. If you are already in the surrounding area this is a great place to walk through.

For nature enthusiasts, Hog’s Island Trail offers a peaceful walk through maritime forests and salt marshes, with an observation deck for birdwatching and wildlife viewing.
You may also come across thousands of crabs scurrying along the ground. There are so many of these tiny crabs you can actually hear them!! Personally, I think this is such a magical place.
After you pass the observation deck you will find a gorgeous view of the inlet. If you walk along the beach you will find millions of different clam shells stacked deep along the shoreline.
