1. Lake Norman

Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, offering 520 miles of shoreline for visitors to explore.

Known for its boating and fishing opportunities, this lake is a popular spot for water enthusiasts.

You may also find dozens of great places to eat such as the North Harbor Club or Eddie’s on the Lake which are located on the waterfront.

2. Lake Mattamuskeet

As the largest natural lake in North Carolina, Lake Mattamuskeet is a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The lake is found extremely close to the NC coastline and is famous for its wintering waterfowl population, making it a prime spot for birdwatching and wildlife photography.

While motorized boats are allowed on the lake, many visitors prefer to take a peaceful kayak or canoe ride right off the Lake Mattamuskeet Boat Ramp to fully appreciate the serene surroundings.

3. Badin Lake

Located in the Uwharrie National Forest, Badin Lake is a picturesque destination for outdoor recreation and is one of my personal favorites in North Carolina (mainly because we live close by).

Boating and fishing are popular activities on the lake, with anglers seeking out bass, crappie, and catfish. The surrounding forest offers hiking trails and camping opportunities in Uwharrie, making it an ideal spot for a weekend getaway.

4. High Rock Lake

High Rock Lake is known for its excellent fishing, particularly for largemouth bass and striped bass. High Rock is also part of a system with Badin Lake.

Boaters can enjoy cruising along the lake’s 365 miles of shoreline, taking in the beautiful scenery and finding secluded coves for swimming and picnicking.

There are several areas to launch a kayak, boat, or paddle board, but two of our favorite spots are the Southmount Abbotts Creek Boat Ramp and Pebble Beach.

You may also find the High Rock Marina and Campground to be one of the most popular spots on the lake. Tie up your boat while you go camping.

5. Lake Lure

Surrounded by the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains, Lake Lure is a popular destination for outdoor recreation and relaxation. It is known for its “million dollar view” offering 360 views of the mountains.

Motorized boats are allowed on the lake, and you can find many boat rental companies on this lake. You may even find a place to stay on Lake Lure that includes a boat with the house rental.

There are plenty of things to do at Lake Lure! The sandy beach area is perfect for sunbathing and swimming, while nearby hiking trails offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

6. Lake Wylie

Spanning both North Carolina and South Carolina, Lake Wylie offers a wide range of water activities for visitors to enjoy.

Boating, fishing, and water sports are popular on the lake, with several public boat ramps available for easy access. Try one of the following boat ramps:

  • Allison Creek Boat Ramp
  • Copperhead Island Boat Launch
  • Nivens Creek Landing

The lake is also known for its annual fishing tournaments, attracting anglers from near and far.

7. Nantahala Lake

Nestled in the Nantahala National Forest, Nantahala Lake is a crystal clear and peaceful retreat surrounded by lush forests and mountains.

In 1942 Nantahala Power designed the lake to provide electricity for war efforts.

While motorized boats are allowed on the lake, it’s best known for its tranquil atmosphere, making it ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding. The clear waters are perfect for swimming, and the surrounding trails offer opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing.

There are also plenty of beach access areas along the 42-mile shoreline at Nantahala Lake.

8. Lake Fontana

You will find several marinas on this lake including Fontana Village Resort Marina, Prince Boat Dock, and Alarka Marina.

9. Lake Tahoma

This is a Private lake so unless you have a house on it you may not be able to access it. You may be able to catch some glimpses of the lake for photography or for your own personal enjoyment.

The lake’s crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and fishing, providing a refreshing retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

10. Belews Lake

Belews Lake was created in 1973. Duke Energy designed this lake to cool the corporation’s steam station.

12. Randleman Lake

While motorized boats are allowed on the lake, it’s best explored by kayak or canoe to fully appreciate its natural beauty.

13. Jordan Lake

Lake Jordan is a very popular lake in the area, so make sure you make reservations for campsites or rentals ahead of time.

14. Lake Crabtree

Known as the “Nation’s Safest Beach,” White Lake is a family-friendly destination located closer to the coast of North Carolina.

Motorized boats are allowed on the lake, providing opportunities for water skiing and tubing.

The lake’s sandy shores are ideal for sunbathing and building sandcastles. It was a pretty fun lake to kayak because the waves from all the boats would rock you around.

There are also a few shops and restaurants you can visit near the beach access area. We had to pay $5 in parking at the time we went, but I believe there are free areas around the lake.

17. W. Kerr Scott Lake

Surrounded by the rolling hills of western North Carolina, W. Kerr Scott Lake offers stunning views and ample opportunities for outdoor adventure.
