Virginia has some beautiful scenery. Grayson Highlands is absolutely gorgeous any time of the year. It’s set on 4,502 acres of rolling and endless hills. There are several places to camp, including a back packers parking lot, which you can free camp from (you would have to purchase a permit in advance). This park also includes places for you to stable your horses, a homestead, a beautifull waterfall, and Let’s not forget the views.
Probably one of the best parts about Grayson Highlands is the wild ponies that wander Massie Gap. The gap is about a half a mile from the parking lot, after hiking the Rhododendron trail. The hike is a decent incline to the point where the ponies are, but it’s well worth it. These guys are not skittish in any way, and will let you pet them. Although, you may want to consider the signs posted saying, “do not touch the wild ponies”.
After saying hello to the ponies, make sure you hike a section of the Appalachian trail. You will find that many of the trails are covered in rocks, so make sure you wear your hiking boots.
The hike to the first few pinnacles is with the blood, sweat, and tears. You can see a complete 360 view of just gorgeous mountains as far as the eye can see.
Bellow Massie gap is another hiking trail, the Cabin Creek trail. It is a 1.8 mile hike, round trip. Lower Cabin Creek Falls is what it will take you to.
This beautiful homestead brings so much history to the park. There are several plaques located at most points of the homestead that will enlighten you about the buildings.
Grayson Highlands is a must see, especially if you are already in the area. It made a good day trip for us only live 3 hours away. But you can easily spend several days there exploring everything the park has to offer.
