Hello, Nikole and Clark here. Did you know Oahu Hawaii has some of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the US which include plants not only from Hawaii but from across the world? You will also stumble across some of the best waterfalls in Oahu in places like Waimea Botanical Garden.
We only got to see about 3 or 4 gardens on our trip to Oahu Hawaii, but I wish we had time for them all I’ve never seen this many colorful plants in North Carolina so it was a treat.
We stumbled across most of the botanical gardens while hiking in Oahu or while searching for snorkel spots in Hawaii.

1. Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden
The Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden is 400 acres and is a lush paradise featuring tranquil ponds and majestic mountain views. It’s home to a diverse collection of tropical plants from around the world. Best of all, admission is free!
This gorgeous place also features classes at the visitor’s center where you can learn to grow your own garden. They also host events and bands.
2. Wahiawa Botanical Garden
Nestled in central Oahu, the Wahiawa Botanical Garden is a haven for plant enthusiasts. With diverse collections of palms, heliconias, gingers, and other tropical plants, the garden’s serene atmosphere and well-designed pathways make it a joy to explore.
The pathways are shaded and since it is located in a cooler section of Oahu you may find your visit to be much cooler than other gardens. You can see the map for the garden here.
3. Foster Botanical Garden
One of Oahu’s oldest botanical gardens, Foster Botanical Garden is a true oasis in the heart of Honolulu.
Featuring a stunning collection of tropical plants from around the world, including rare and exotic specimens such as orchids, palms, and gingers. Admission for non-residents is $5.
You may even be able to sneak glimpses of the Punch Bowl crater as we did while visiting the garden.
4. Lyon Arboretum
Located in the lush Manoa Valley, this 200-acre rainforest paradise is home to an incredible diversity of tropical plants and trees, including many endangered species.
The Lyon Arboretum also offers guided tours and educational programs, making it a great place to learn about the importance of conservation.
Admission for non-residents is $10.
5. Queen Kapiolani Garden
Located at the foot of Diamond Head, this charming garden is a tribute to Hawaii’s beloved Queen Kapiolani and features a delightful collection of native Hawaiian plants.
The garden’s peaceful ambiance and stunning views of Diamond Head make it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing picnic. Admission is free!
We never walked around the garden, but we did drive by and it looked stunning. If you are traveling to Diamond Head by foot or bike this may be a good stop.
6. Lili’uokalani Botanical Garden
Named in honor of Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, this hidden gem is home to a stunning collection of native Hawaiian plants.
The Lili’uokalani Botanical Garden’s peaceful ambiance and cultural significance make it a must-visit for anyone interested in Hawaii’s rich botanical heritage.
7. Waimea Valley Garden in Oahu
This lush valley is home to a breathtaking Waimea Valley garden which, in my opinion, is the best botanical garden in Oahu Hawaii. It showcases the diverse flora of Hawaii and other tropical regions around the world.
The valley also offers cultural activities, hula performances, and educational programs that provide visitors with an immersive experience in Hawaiian culture and history. Admission for adults is $26.
We went here to see a hula performance and it did not disappoint. You will also drive along one of Hawaii’s beautiful scenic routes to get here.
The Waimea Valley also has a botanical garden waterfall and is one of the very few that has a water fall display.
8. Koko Crater Botanical Gardens
Koko Crater is one of Oahu’s famous hikes, so why not visit the Koko Crater Botanical Gardens while you are there? You will walk through a rough pathway with loose gravel for 2 2-mile round trip. It should only take you approximately 1.5 hours to finish.
Did I mention it’s FREE to get into this Oahu garden?
In Conclusion
These botanical gardens offer a unique and enriching experience that celebrates the beauty and diversity of Hawaii’s flora.
Whether you’re a plant enthusiast, nature lover, or simply someone who appreciates natural beauty, these botanical gardens are not to be missed.
