Grounding Benefits

Last Updated on July 28, 2021 by Nikole

Grounding is a powerful action that a lot of people ignore or don’t know about. This action can help relieve anxiety, gives you better sleep, helps fight depression, and help your overall health.

(I am no doctor, I am just going by what has worked for me and my anxiety. Please see my disclaimer form. Always seek out your doctor for any professional advice.)

first of all what is grounding? It is the act of exposing your bare skin to the earth, and this creates good vibes. (I know sounds like some hippie mumbo jumbo, but I promise there is some science behind it, so stay with me!)

Science Behind Grounding

So before I lose you, because you think this is some tree hugger crap, here is the science behind grounding.

There are positive Ions and negative ions. Positive Ions are generated by things like computers, cell phones, or TVs (literally everything we use in modern-day society.) Our bodies are magnetically charged and will attract those positive ions (this is what makes you so stressed out). So in order to bring our bodies back to normal, we need the negative charge from the earth to even us out.

It’s amazing to think that we have some control over what our bodies absorb.

US National Library of Medicine is a great website to check out for more reading on the topic.

How to Ground

It’s honestly as easy as it seems. Just take yourself outside and make sure your skin has some contact with the earth. Pip Waller, in his book “Deeply Holistic,” recommends you do this for about 40 minutes a day. (Yeah the book is a tad on the hippie side, but Pip seems to know what he is talking about).

If you need some help thinking of ideas on how to ground yourself, check out the list I have provided below.

  • Bring your work lunch outside and kick those shoes off.
  • take a walk in your yard around the house without shoes.
  • have a picnic.
  • walk on the beach barefoot.
  • hug a tree (no no I’m kidding!) But I guess you could if you really wanted to.
  • Go near running water (I’ll explain more on this later).

What if You Live in an Apartment

Some of us can’t get outdoors for 40 min every single day (actually most of us can’t).

Good news for you, there are some great alternatives that have worked for several people (Just check out these reviews on the link I’ve provided below).

These grounding sheets have a similar effect as the ground does when your skin touches it. They basically imitate the earth’s magnetic field. When you use these sheets make sure there is no sheet over the top of it and your skin is exposed to the sheet.

Keep in mind that some people will not experience results right away. It’s kind of like eating a new diet, you have to give it time to truly work its magic.

There are Other Grounding Techniques

Some people don’t care for sleeping on the sheet all night, so below is a list of other alternatives. I use the matt and place it under my bare feet while I am working on my computer.

grounding mat for work (this one is awesome because it comes with bracelets too!)

grounding pillowcase if you don’t like the sheets

Conclusion

Whether you have unlimited access to the outdoors or not, there are always ways to ground yourself. It is important for you to try and balance what you take in every day. I hope this will be as useful for you as it has been for me.
