You may try to find the perfect hiking spot in Oahu, or maybe you are riding along a scenic route in Hawaii and you stumble upon a pristine beach. That’s why it’s important to always be ready for the perfect adventure.

Plan a snorkeling trip in Oahu by mapping snorkel locations and reviewing safety measures like reef-safe sunscreen, poisonous ocean life, and box jellyfish.

Use Reef Safe Sunscreen

Protecting your skin from the sun’s rays is essential, but it’s important to choose a sunscreen that is safe for the delicate marine environment.

Look for reef-safe sunscreen, such as the SPF 50 Sun Bum brand, options that are free of harmful chemicals such as oxybenzone and octinoxate, which can be damaging to coral reefs and marine life.

When to Go Snorkeling In Oahu Hawaii

The best time to go snorkeling in Oahu is summertime when the surf is down.

Snorkeling in the winter in Oahu should be avoided because the surf is up and the current is stronger. Wintertime snorkeling also interferes with surfers, which poses yet another threat.

Be Aware of Poisonous Ocean Life

While Oahu’s waters are teeming with beautiful marine creatures, it’s important to be aware of potentially harmful species.

Keep an eye out for sea urchins, lionfish, and other venomous creatures, and avoid touching or disturbing them.

You can brush up on some of these poisonous creatures at LivingHawaii.com and learn how to deal with stings, cuts, and abrasions.

Avoid Box Jellyfish Season

Box jellyfish are known to frequent the waters around Oahu during certain times of the year, particularly during the summer months. We happened to visit when it was Box Jellyfish season, but thankfully we never got stung.

You can check the local jellyfish forecast here before heading out for a snorkeling excursion, and consider wearing a protective rash guard for added peace of mind.

Obey Laws

Respecting the natural environment is crucial when snorkeling, hiking, or looking for waterfalls in Oahu.

Avoid stepping on or touching coral, as it is a delicate and vital part of the marine ecosystem. Additionally, refrain from capturing or disturbing any wildlife you encounter during your snorkeling adventures.

Now that you’re armed with the essential knowledge for a safe and responsible snorkeling experience, let’s explore some of the best snorkeling spots Oahu has to offer.

1. Snorkeling at Kuilima Cove

Located on the North Shore of Oahu is Kuilima Cove at Turtle Bay.

The cove is also protected by a natural breakwater, making it a great spot for beginners or those looking for a more relaxed snorkeling experience.

Keep in mind that the hotel guests at Turtle Bay have priority access to the area and the staff will not allow outsiders to use chairs, umbrellas, or rentals. We learned this the hard way and almost got kicked out of the area.

If you are located in Waikikii with no transportation I recommend taking a tour such as the Ultimate Grand Oahu Circle Island Tour with Snorkeling and More. This tour takes you to Turtle Bay (along with several other stops) in an air-conditioned bus and even gives you rental snorkel equipment.

P.S. This is a fairly cheap tour ($95) considering you get snacks, equipment, and transportation.
